Light at End of Tunnel for Lamp Recycling

Date: 21 September 2007

Enva Northern Ireland has been awarded a Recolight Compliance Scheme lamp recycling contract, which has the potential to see in excess of 2 million gas discharge lamps (commonly referred to as fluorescent tubes) collected and recycled by Enva.

Under The Hazardous Waste Regulations (NI) 2005, gas discharge lamps are classified as a hazardous waste because of the small but significant amounts of mercury that they contain. Indeed, research has identified a fluorescent tube contains enough mercury to pollute 30,000 litres of water beyond safe drinking level.

Gas Discharge Lamps - Fluorescent Tubes - Recolight

Covering all of Northern Ireland, the contract will see Enva assisting both Local Authorities & business in ensuring that this waste stream is properly collected and recycled, using best practice technology.

Recolight was established by the UK Lamp Industry in 2005, primarily for the purpose of operating a WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) Compliance Scheme on behalf of lamp producers in the UK. Current legislation stipulates all “producers” (manufacturers, importers, suppliers etc) provide for end of life gas discharge lamps to be collected, treated and recycled appropriately.

Under the scheme, Recolight will meet the producer’s obligations to ensure that adequate processes and finance are available to recycle the product at the end of its life. This allows businesses to focus on running their business operations safe in the knowledge that their obligations are being met in a cost effective and environmentally sound manner. Recolight, in addition, provides support to businesses by providing a dedicated call centre for producers.

Commenting on the contract, Barry Johnson, General Manager/Director, Enva Northern Ireland said: “We are delighted to have been awarded the contract by Recolight and are extremely pleased they have regarded Enva as a suitable partner. Since being classified as a Hazardous Waste in 2005, we have witnessed a considerable push from those requiring a safe and efficient recycling service concerning gas discharge lamps. At Enva, we are pleased to be able to provide such a service, to help increase recycling rates in Northern Ireland”.

Alex Hawkins, Recolight added: “We choose to award the contract to Enva based on their overall competitive offer and professional approach to the delivery of waste management solutions. Enva have offered an effective solution to the collection & recycling of end-of-life gas discharge lamps through the efficient delivery, storage, collection and treatment methods they employ”.
